Affordable Dining Adventures for the Untourist in Vancouver

When you come to Vancouver on your Canada vacation a highlight will be sampling the city’s best restaurants. The problem is that the most well-known of these – usually the ones taking up all the space in your guidebook – can break the bank.

Here are my picks for the best Vancouver restaurants where you can have your cake and eat it too.

Best Summer Seafood: Go Fish! (1505 w. 1st ave, across from Granville Island) is a ramshackle shack on Fisherman’s Wharf serving up the freshest, tastiest seafood of any Vancouver restaurant. Work up an appetite with a stroll along the seawall or a tour of Granville Island before ordering a salmon tacone, beer-battered halibut and chips, or any of the daily specials. Take your fare to a sea-side bench with views of Granville Island and the mountains. This is a fair-weather summertime treat as there is no indoor seating.

Best Gourmet Indian: Rangoli (1488 w. 11th ave) is the sister shop to Vij’s, a well-known Vancouver restaurant often featured in international guidebooks, magazines, and TV shows. Vij’s food is superb, but the restaurant’s fame also means lineups out the door (they don’t take reservations) and a higher price tag. Rangoli, while more modest with decidedly smaller tables, features the same recipes and incredibly inventive cuisine for a fraction of the price.

Best Dessert: For a special night out in the luxury of a fine Vancouver hotel’s gourmet restaurant, you can’t beat the desert buffet at Griffins at Hotel Vancouver (900 W. Georgia). A delicious assortment of as many freshly made pastries, cakes, and chocolate confections as you can eat for only $13 ($8 when accompanied by a meal).

Best Asian: Guu (838 Thurlow St) is not for the faint-of-heart. A Japanese BBQ chain serving up unique cooked small plates (or tapas) to Japanese exchange students and locals in the know. This is not the place to go for generic yakisoba or California rolls, but a great, loud place to try something new.

Wherever you choose to dine, be sure to choose something a little different. Vancouver has some of the best restaurants in the world, in every type of cuisine you can imagine.

5 Reasons Why You Must Study Japanese

There are various reasons why you should visit Japan and learn Japanese. It could be the booming economy, gorgeous landscapes, ancient culture, or lovely people. This list will definitely persuade you.

You can learn Japanese for many reasons. Japan has breathtaking landscapes, interesting people, a thriving economy, and an ancient culture. You will be hard pressed to pick your best reason, though this incomplete list will try to convince you; and if it does not, then perhaps a visit to Japan will convince you. But first, take a peek at the list.

Acclaimed Director Akira Kurosawa

You have missed out on the best movies of all time if you have not seen Akira Kurosawa's art works. The sweeping landscapes, exciting scenes, painstaking attention to detail, amazing stories, and timeless appeal make his films - Seven Samurai, Ran, Throne of Blood, and Dreams, to name a few - a must for any avid movie buff. And because most of his films are in his native language, you should speak Japanese to see them in all their pure glory.

Anime

You'll probably think Japanese anime weird if you are used to Disney and Pixar animations. The speech bubbles, over-the-top physical features, and onomatopoeic typography aside, it does possess gripping storylines and charming adorable creatures. To appreciate the likes of Dragon Ball Z and Naruto, study Japanese.

Chindogu, A Japanese Art

Among the various Japanese art forms such as origami, ikebana, and tea ceremony, the chindogu is the most note-worthy. This art form is all about inventing everyday gadgets with the best intentions, but result in being useless anyway. As a matter of fact, the only thing these gadgets achieve is bringing on the laughs.

Maybe you're interested in a hay fever hat, which is a tissue dispenser atop your head? Or maybe you want to keep your hair away from your bowl of noodles with a noodle-eater hairguard? You might be able to turn these chindogu gadgets into profitable items if you speak to the inventor; hence, why you have to learn Japanese. Strange things like these do occur.

Japanese Dishes

Although Japanese food might look very basic on the surface, it actually requires a lot of effort and attention to detail. Study Japanese to prepare Japanese food the right way. This way, you'll be able to quickly grasp the terms used and know the names of the dishes.

Japanese Fashion

Japan's garish street fashion cannot be topped, even by New York. You will love the avant garde costumes such as Kogals, Bosozoku, Lolitas, and Ganguros donned by young people in Tokyo.

Japan also has the quickest rising economy in the world. Not only that, the Japanese are also the third largest Internet users. The business opportunities offered by the country is numerous. If you still require a reason to study Japanese, this should be good enough.

The world's fastest growing economy is also the Japanese one. The third largest Internet users all over the world are also the Japanese. Consider the business ventures that the country has to give. If you still need a reason to study Japanese, this must be sufficient.

Ten Things You Can Get in Japan You Can't Get in China

As part of the recent news that China has just overtaken Japan as the world's second largest economy and our comments on that here, let us now take the opportunity to run another of our occasional, tongue firmly in cheek pieces on the 10 things you can get…and this time, featuring Japan and China. We'll run the 10 things in China you can't get in Japan in a couple of days.
Useful coins
Apart from the useless aluminum 1 jiao and the mighty 1RMB disc, China has dispensed with coins. Not so in Japan, where the four lines of the Tokyo Metro almost seem to have their own, separate currency. JPY260 to Shinjuko? Drop them right in the slot and a ticket comes out. Hell, you can even buy a bowl of lunchtime noodles with the JPY1,000. Try giving your average Shanghai noodle seller a fistful of jiao for his cooking and he'll show you the door, followed by a bowl aimed at your head.
Imperial Family
Bernardo Bertolucci's film "The Last Emperor" showed us what happened to poor old Pu Yi, the Dalai Lama of his day. Abdicating 99 years ago in 1912, we wonder if any 100 year anniversaries will be planned by the Chinese government in 12 months' time – the deed being a catalyst for their eventual victory of control of power in China. Not so in Japan, where despite being defeated and made to admit being humans after all following their surrender in World War II, the Imperial Family is still going strong. The world's oldest surviving monarchy, with an unbroken chain of ancestors dating back 125 generations, they live in the seclusion of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
Decent cartoons
From Manga to Anime and Hentai, Japanese cartoons rule. Chinese and other Asian copies are just that – pale imitations. From Pokemon, Doraemon, and my favorite, Dragonballz, not to mention the astounding animation of Hayao Miyazaki, Japanese animation and art is pretty much globally unrivalled. Check out the films My Neighbor Totoro and the Oscar-winning Spirited Away for confirmation.
The kimono
Only the Japanese could come up with something as bizarre as the kimono. Platform sandals, wings, yards of embroidered silk…these magnificent, yet utterly dysfunctional items of clothing are a far cry from the Mao suit. One can still see older ladies wearing them in fashionable areas of Japan today, while advice on how to actually put the thing on can be found here. Which brings us to geishas….
Geishas
The exquisite arts of singing, dancing and pouring tea? Or an up-market form of prostitution? Off limits to the barbarians of the West, geishas are an ancient tradition in Japan (mind you, so is sex). The word geisha itself literally means "person of the arts" – indeed the earliest geisha were men – and it is as performers of dance, music and poetry that they actually spend most of their working time. Hiring a geisha these days though is serious money – you're talking about US$700 an hour per person, for a minimum four hours, four guest evening. Japanese only spoken.
Hello Kitty
Ok, you can get plenty of Hello Kitty in China, but only the knockoffs. The world's only feline with no mouth, she is beloved by every Japanese female aged from 5 to 150. A weird staple of five-year-old kids' innocence that seems somehow to have morphed into a fashion icon for the late twenties, Hello Kitty is to be found dangling from Louis Vuitton bags, as iPhone skins and (presumably not skinned and furred) as handbags. Weird, slightly creepy, but with the added advantage of not talking, many men globally think the latter trait should be taken up by women – well, everywhere.
Sumo wrestlers
For a nation of people only across the Sea of Japan, the Japanese can sure grow their menfolk to supersized proportions compared to China. Even though the sport has recently begun to include the occasional Hawaiian and Mongolian bruisers, it's hard to imagine any Chinese male being able to attain such bulk. Although some of the little emperors, fed a diet of Big Mac's to make them "smart like the Americans," may come close in about 10 years' time. No, it's the Japanese who reign supreme, and all that salt chucking and blubbering collision of homo leviathans means if it were an Olympic sport, the Japanese would gain revenge for being excluded from Ping-Pong.
Senkaku islands
The Japanese control ‘em, the Chinese want them, and fishing vessels, submarines and the Japanese coast guard all play quasi cat and mouse games around them. Known as the Diaoyu Islands in Chinese, the weird thing is that Beijing recognizes they actually belong to Taiwan. Meanwhile, the earliest recorded map identifies them in both Chinese and Japanese languages. Who cares? They're mainly uninhabited apart from a load of squid swimming around them, although they do possess a creature found nowhere else on the planet. Step (or burrow) forward – the Senkaku mole. Whichever side you're on, the Senkaku have in fact been under Japanese control since 1895. Leave those moles in peace, the Chinese would only eat them.
Katana swords
Despite its often warlike periods, Chinese military weapons never seemed to match the honing of the more sophisticated Japanese counterparts. The katana sword, as used exclusively by Samurai, is a case in point. Renowned for its sharpness and cutting ability, the katana has an almost mythical status about it – an object of beauty as well as death. Best of the best though are the Meitou swords. A rare class of katana, Meitou means "Celebrated Sword" or "Named Sword." They are prized swords typically handmade by renowned sword-smiths and passed on through generations, won in battle, or given as a gift out of respect. Meitou are superior to ordinary katana in most aspects: cutting, endurance, and so on. Meitou are more expensive, due to their quality. The Chinese, meanwhile, used to sharpen up the bamboo.
Sake
More refined in their drinking habits, the Japanese have sake, which can be served either hot (good in winter) or chilled (excellent with sushi). Made from milled rice grains, it's actually made in a process not dissimilar to brewing beer. Cool, light and refreshing, it's great in a saketini. Meanwhile, its more alcoholic cousin, shochu packs a more powerful punch at about 25 percent proof. The world guide to sake is here. Somehow, maotai or baijiu just don't have that elegance.

Business and Market Overview of Malaysia

ECONOMY. Malaysia is a middle-income economy and has the third highest GDP per capita (US$4,625) among the Southeast Asian countries after Singapore and Brunei. The country was primarily a producer of raw materials but transformed its economy from the 1970s to the 1990s into a multi-sector economy. Malaysia's economic growth is export driven mainly from exports of electrical and electronic products.

Malaysia's economy is relatively stable with healthy foreign exchange reserves and a GDP of US$118.3 billion in 2004. From 2000 to 2004, Malaysia's real GDP grew by an annual average of 5.7% while inflation remained below 2.0% and unemployment below 4.0%. The Asian economic crisis of 1997 adversely affected Malaysia's economy during the period. It is unlikely that the country will experience an economic crisis similar to 1997 with current healthy foreign exchange reserves, low inflation and small foreign debt.

The manufacturing sector accounted for 48.5% of Malaysia's GDP in 2004, services accounted for 42.4% and the agriculture sector accounted for 9.1%. Major industries include electronic & electrical products, textiles, clothing & footwear, chemicals, petroleum, wood and metal products. Major agriculture industries include palm oil, rubber, cocoa, rice, poultry and timber.

The festivals consist of large fireworks shows, the largest of which use between 100000 and 120000 rounds (Tondabayashi, Osaka), and can attract more than 800000 spectators. Street vendors set up stalls to sell various drinks and staple Japanese food (such as Yakisoba, Okonomiyaki, Takoyaki, kakigori(shaved ice)), and traditionally held festival games, such as Kingyo-sukui, or Goldfish-catching. Both men and women don Yukata, summer Kimono , or Jinbei (men only) and attend these events, collecting in large social circles of family or friends to sit picnic-like, eating and drinking, while watching the show. Mamagoto - Play With Food!

We went over on a hot Wednesday afternoon to check out the place. Of course, we didn't easily get parking in Khan Market and had to park our car quite far from the epicentre of Khan Market. Weary from the long walk, we sat down craving for some good coolers to quench our thirst. So we ordered the Lemon Twist and Bloody Mary rightaway. We say, good mocktails! Functional Film -The General Trend Of Soft Pack Industry

Plastic film is a production of plastic products in the largest category, variety, in the agricultural, industrial and construction and other fields a wide range of applications. At present, China plastic film production accounts for about 20% of the total output of plastic products, plastic products faster output growth in one of the categories.
China's plastic packaging after 20 years of development, has formed a certain scale, in the packaging market occupies an important position. In 1980 only 191,000 tons annual output value of 3.0 billion in 2002 annual output reached 4.01 million tons, the output value, up to 680 billion yuan, accounting for 250 billion yuan output value of packaging industry in the 27%. As the industry continuously improve the level of equipment, plastic packaging film of the growing trend towards the development of functional, high performance, high-tech plastic packaging film is becoming a pillar industry of many enterprises and research and development goals.
Modern packaging products not only have good mechanical properties, including materials, the anti-tensile strength, tear resistance, impact strength, but also have excellent chemical stability, not with the contents of any chemical reaction products to ensure that products built security, should also have a higher temperature resistance, high temperature sterilization and low temperature storage to meet such requirements. The 21st century, China's largest market for packaging, in fact, is a hi-tech power of modern packaging big battle.
In this case, the plastic film for packaging development of new varieties are also very active in order to maximize personalized to meet the market needs. As the material properties of the limitations of their own or price factors, the soft plastic packaging from the original single-layer films have been produced, to a multi-species, multi-level development of the composite packaging film. Plastic performance improvements will continue to stimulate the development of plastic packaging market, these performance improvements can be extended product shelf life and reduce the use of materials and make packaging more convenient.
Experts predict that in the near future the domestic market demand for plastic film may be at an annual rate of 9% continues to grow, China's plastic film market prospect is very broad. Technological progress makes the packages feature a diversity of development in the trend, in addition to the general strength of the film is suitable for sealing with requirements, mainly through the raw materials, additives or process of adjustment to make packaging film has some special features to fit within the packaging of the functional requirements, such as multi-functional with a high barrier film, can be high-temperature cooking, baking-resistant, low temperature refrigeration, as well as anti-static, anti-rust, anti-odor, shape memory and other plastic packaging material.
Abroad, has developed a number of features unique and broad range of packaging by consumers of all ages. Used to digest food, such as protein, fat, starch-based material made of a non-packaged foods affect the taste of food wrapping paper, packaging feature complete, packaging materials that can be powered by human consumption or feed, both to save resources without polluting the environment, subject to the market. As in Japan have been developed to use in class extracted from the shell chitin de-acetic acid, creating a kind of edible packaging, using this package noodles, condiments, etc., can be directly into the cooking pot, do not have to remove the packaging.
Germany invented the chlorophyll stained film: As in most foods contain chlorophyll, and this pigment in the light occurs under irradiation of light-sensitive oxidation and decomposition in food energy and thus lead to food decay. To extend the period of food preservation, the traditional use of opaque packaging or packaging materials, or use plastic packaging and make a vacuum in order to cut off food and oxygen. The former can not make an intuitive selection of consumers, while the latter is more complex and costs are relatively higher, while the introduction of new functional thin film for packaging, not only the method is simple and low-cost and easy selection.
China's packaging industry is a small workshop production had arisen out of the way, its personnel structure and professional structure of the irrational, engineers, senior workers was very low. Senior engineers, technicians and senior technicians are extremely small, while a large proportion of first-line production of skilled workers lack proper professional training, and many enterprises, especially small and medium private enterprises are unwilling to invest in personnel training, which greatly restricted the industry practitioners overall quality improvement in the formation of professionals shortage situation.
Thus, my original composite film industry is undergoing major reforms, around the level, on the scale, on the principle of efficiency to the development of deep processing. Functional thin film is to the newer and higher levels of development, at the same time, ink and adhesives bag printing technology advances also contributed to China's film industry to a more depth. China's development of functional thin film is not yet very mature, companies are still relatively weak sense of innovation. As the product category refinement and specialization of production equipment, domestic enterprises should be the introduction of equipment and technology, based on careful digestion and absorption and improve the independent innovation capability.

Ramen Noodle Salad Recipe

Ramen noodles are made from dough of wheat flour, salt, and a type of alkaline water containing potassium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate. Eggs are sometimes used instead of alkaline water. Noodles are usually flat, fat, thin, and ribbon-like. They can be straight or wrinkled and they come in yellowish hue. Ramen is a typical Japanese food though it originated in China. It is usually cooked with broth or boiling liquids flavored with meat and vegetables. Toppings are usually added like pork and onions to add flavor.

One example of ramen noodles that gained popularity is yakisoba. Yakisoba means "fried noodles." It is prepared with vegetables, bite-sized pork, carrots, cabbage, salt and pepper. It is usually served in a plate. Another way of preparing yakisoba is by piling the noodles. The piled noodles are placed on sliced bread and showered with pickles.

Instant ramen is a popular food among Orientals. Since it production, its preparation has gave birth to wide varieties of recipes ranging from fried ramen to salads, served mostly in restaurants. It has gained popularity in western countries and is now served not only with meat-based broth but with a wide range of ingredients like vegetables, nuts, and fruits.

Salads are mixtures of foods, often served with dressings with addition of meat, fish, cheese and grains. According to history, salads originated in countries like Italy and the Netherlands. The word "salad" comes from the French word "salade" which means salt in Latin. There are types of salads. These are sometimes named based on the food items mixed with the vegetables. Some of popular ones are Antipasto salad, Chef salad, chicken salad, and ham salad. Dressings come in wide varieties like vinegar, mayonnaise, lemon, or soy sauce.

Below is a simple ramen noodle salad recipe that is easy to do. This requires no heating and is ready to eat as soon as all ingredients were mixed up.

Cabbage Ramen Noodle Salad
Ingredients for the salad:
1 package of Top Ramen Noodles, crumbled
½ head cabbage, finely chopped
4 green onions, chopped
½ can sliced almonds

Directions: Mix all ingredients together except the ramen noodles and refrigerate.

Ingredients for the dressing:
Flavor packet from the noodles
2 tbsp of sugar
3 tbsp of vinegar
½ tsp of pepper

Directions: Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Serve as a salad dressing.

If you are tired of cooking ramen the traditional way, you can try this ramen noodle salad recipe at home. You can serve this either as your main dish or side dish.

There are other simple ramen noodle salad recipes out there. Sanyo Foods Corporation of America offers different food services, products, soups, sauces, condiments and dressings to suit your innovation when it comes to making salad from ramen. Sapporo Ichiban, a product of Sanyo Foods, is one of the popular brands of ramen noodles in the market today. A wide variety of flavors ranging from soy sauce, chicken, beef, shrimp, and miso are available. These ramen noodles come with their distinct colored packaging.

Business and Market Overview of Vietnam

ECONOMY. In 1986, the Vietnamese government abandoned its Marxist economic policy and implemented "doi moi" (renovation) involving economic structural reforms. These reforms included modernising and liberalising the economy and developing more export driven industries. Vietnam joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) and became a signatory of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA). The US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement in 2001 has brought major changes to Vietnam's economy and hopes to become a member of the WTO in 2006.

Vietnam's GDP grew at an average of 7.3% annually in 2000-2004 and reached US$44.5 billion by 2004 and unemployment declined from 6.4% in 2000 to 5.6% in 2004. However, inflation steadily increased reaching 7.8% by 2004 and prompted Vietnam's government to implement monetary and fiscal controls to manage inflationary pressures.

The manufacturing sector contributed towards 40.1% of Vietnam's GDP in 2004 while the service sector contributed 38.2%. The agriculture sector contributed towards 38.7% of the country's GDP in 1990 but declined to 21.8% by 2004. Major industries include processed foods, garments and shoes, mining (coal and steel) cement, fertilisers, glass, tyres, paper and petroleum. Major agriculture products include rice, coffee, rubber, cotton, tea, pepper, soybean, cashew nuts, peanuts, sugar cane, peanuts, bananas, poultry and seafood.

Staying Healthy with Healthy Food Choices

Despite lacking any clinical evidence, Americans spend approximately thirty billion dollars every year on slimming products. Choosing easily obtainable real foods instead of taking weight loss supplements to compensate for poor nutrition can help achieve and maintain your appropriate weight. There are at least a dozen foods that can effectively help you lose weight by controlling your hunger and cravings, and increasing your metabolism, all indicated by reputable studies. The best foods are packed with good nutrients and elements to fight ailments with the result of a healthy life.
Healthy foods will fill you up and taste great. A really good breakfast choice is oatmeal with cinnamon on top. You'll be taking in only 110 calories and 2 grams of fat, while filling your body with whole grains, fiber, phosphorus, magnesium, and antioxidants. Including just a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon assists with preventing insulin from going up and reduces blood glucose, as well triglyceride levels in people who have type II diabetes.
A healthy lunch is obviously a salad because it is low in calories with a lot of vitamin C, E, folic acid, lycopene, and carotenoids which fight disease. Beans are shown in many diets to be good at decreasing appetite with weight loss while maintaining a stable low blood sugar level. Some less often talked about appetite suppressors include tofu and chicken noodle soup. You might not think about hot red peppers when it comes to weight loss; however a study in Japan verified that the substance capsaicin supports appetite suppression and makes the metabolism higher.
For something to snack on, try a pear or a handful of nuts. The FDA says an average sized pear has six grams of fiber and apples have three grams, making both fruits a satisfying snack. Nuts might have a lot of calories, with 165 calories in a handful, but research reveals that people who eat nuts for snacks are thinner and have better health. A study of a group of people who consumed 500 of their calories as peanuts were shown to experience a metabolic rate that was 11% higher, as well as having improvements in other areas of health. An illustration would be that walnuts have omega 3 fatty acids which protect against cancer and eating just 10 to 20 pecans each day have been known to decrease the chance of getting heart disease.
You need to drink the best drinks in addition to consuming the best foods. There isn't anything as good for your body as eight cups of water daily. This fluid lubricates the body and cells, rejuvenates the skin, and supports digestion. A very effective weight loss drink is milk. Many different studies have results that show a diet high in calcium encourages fat burning instead of fat storage. Green tea promotes higher metabolism, fat burning, and LDL cholesterol reduction, as well. So paying attention to foods and drinks that are high in nutrients and disease-fighting elements will not only help you maintain a healthy weight, but also live a long, healthy life.

“experiences From ‘the Flow’ (19): Another Good Tilt With a Bar Girl?”

By Carl “J.C.” Pantejo, Copyright March 2008

(Author “My Friend Yu – The Prosperity Mentor,” Copyright August 2007. Pantejo - Y.N. Vurce Publishing.)

“Prosperity: The eternal flow of all that’s good in life…”

*Below is the nineteenth episode based on a series of real life events experienced by the author. The only deviations from the truth may be the names of people and places. These stories are also incorporated in “My Friend Yu – the Prosperity Mentor: Book II,” Pantejo - Y.N. Vurce Publishing. Release Date: 2008.

The naïve customer (a person not savvy at “The Game” of Thai bars) doesn’t understand the following: The main thing a Bar Girl sees when a man comes into their bar is the amount of dollar signs he is capable of producing.

And, of course, Bar Girls are experts at helping customers part with their money!

This article is mainly for those fearless souls who, in spite of the discussions we had about Asian Bar Girl/Western Man Relationships in “Experiences from ‘The Flow’ (18)...,” still insist on having a serious relationship with a Bar Girl.

- A Blissful State -

Congratulations.

You believe that you have found a partner that loves you and makes you happy. She is young, beautiful, sweet, and sexy - everything you could not find in your home country, right?

Sure, she is not perfect, especially in the language and finance areas; but when you weighed the Pluses against the Minuses on Your Scale, the Scale tilted toward Obvious Compatibility.

- Devil’s Advocate -

Okay, now I got to be the a$$hole, the party-pooper, the spoiler, etc.

But I do this with ultimate empathy, my friend.

I do this because I don’t want you to end up as a statistic, one of the thousands of Farangs (Thai: foreigners) that think they’ve found the woman of their dreams, only to find out (in short order) that reality doesn’t match their idealized notions of co-habitation with an Asian woman.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but believe me, what I’ve got to say may:

1. Save you a lot of heartache, headaches, and bankruptcy.

2. Help you maintain (or improve) your current blissful state for as long as possible.

3. Raise some questions whose answers, however distasteful, will make you a wiser Farang in Thailand.

- Questions -

Where did you meet your Thai girlfriend/wife?

In a bar?

I ask you this because the ole’ saying: “You can take the girl out of the bar, but you can’t take the bar out of the girl,” is a tried and true axiom.

The cruel fact is that there are only two times you can trust a Thai Bar Girl:

1) When she has just begun her career in the Bar Girl Profession and

2) When she is a bar-weary veteran, ready to retire.

All others are “in between” (i.e., still on “active duty,” practicing and perfecting their sex appeal, schemes, and routines).

A mid-career Bar Girl in “The Game” is quite a sight to be seen, indeed.

She means to be a key player in “The Game” and will do anything to get the most money, as fast as she can, from the “customer pool – men”.

For these women, men are only regarded as: past customers, prospective customers, current cash cows, or merely toy/playthings that pay).

In their minds, men are definitely not: friends, lovers, non-paying boyfriends or husbands; in short, men are merely things, not real people with feelings, hopes, and desires).

Why is this so?

Although each Bar Girl is a unique individual, the following are common reasons. In part or parcel, these conditions contribute to their cut throat callousness - the “sharp teeth within their cute, beautiful smiles”:

1. Professional Objectivity (staying focused on making money before she gets too old and “unmarketable”).

2. Protection from scoundrels (yes, there are many bad men out there).

3. A lack of “good men role models” in their lives. That is, most of the men they’ve seen throughout their lives were usually uneducated, lazy, abusive, or unreliable, often disappearing for years to forever. This is common in the rural, poverty stricken areas “up country” – North Eastern Thailand.

4. Protection from being emotionally hurt. Since most foreigners come and go rapidly, it’s stupid for them to get emotionally attached.

5. The only support system they have is the Bar’s social network of fellow Bar Girls, Mamasans, clean-up boys, and “katoys” (Thai: transsexuals). Leaving the bar scene means venturing into scary, uncharted waters without her usual friends.

6. Most are uneducated, not attending or finishing High School. What would they do and where would they go if they left the bar?

7. They have tried (or simply dislike) regular “daytime jobs” and were disillusioned with the hard work and low pay. The bar scene is all they know. It can be fun. It’s easy – all one has to do is look pretty and entertain - AND definitely pays better.

It’s a system that swallows up thousands of “fresh from the farm” girls and spits out seasoned, “bar-tested” veterans.

- True Love? -

A young serviceman friend of mine in Japan told me that the woman (an Asian woman) he met at a bar in the infamous “honch” area outside of Yokosuka U.S. Naval Base was truly in love with him.

He actually considered asking her to marry him.

And he wanted some advice from “a salty dog” (meaning: me).

His naivety was painful to observe.

In him, I saw a young version of myself, full of all the right motives, but without the where-with-all that only comes from years of schlepping in and out of Asian bars.

My response to him?

“Go back there and tell her you’re out of money. Better yet, tell her that you want to move in with her, but you need to borrow money until payday. Good luck, son. I’ll talk to you next week.”

Of course, he was singing a totally different tune when I saw him a week later. He was very pissed-off and his comments about her were acidic, bordering on murderous.

I told him to chill out.

“Don’t’ take it personal. A girl’s got’ta eat. Think of it this way: You’re mixing her business with your pleasure. If you really think it’s love, wait, wait, and wait! And for God’s sake always know where your valuables are!” I said.

I don’t’ know whether my words sunk in (or not) because I haven’t heard from him for over a decade now. I can only hope that my words prevented a few personal disasters.

Ah, Bar Girls. I could go on and on about them.

They’re amazing. Aren’t they?

They’re terrible. Aren’t they?

- Some Advice: Take it or Leave it, Your Choice -

Since only a fraction of one percent of Asian Bar Girl/Western Man relationships succeed (usually because she is either a rookie or a ready-to-retire veteran), I will be submitting a short list of things to ponder at the end of this article.

If you met your “compatible partner” in a bar, I advise you to have a healthy paranoia.

Don’t go buying a car for her. Or even worse, a house in her name! (As ridiculous as this may sound, it happens frequently in Thailand).

In short, don’t go broke over her.

I have too many friends who have taken out unsecured, personal loans and maxed out their credit cards over Bar Girls who’ve long since disappeared.

In fact, I know of three individuals who came home from work to a barren house or apartment. No furniture, refrigerator, TV, stereo, clothes, dishes, etc.! Everything was gone! Nothing, I mean nothing was left! My friends literally had to borrow money for food and sheets!

Best advice?

Just wait and watch.

It might sound like a prison sentence to you, but waiting and watching not only protects you from being ransacked; it also gives you time to observe her true character - in every light.

How long?

A good rule of thumb, if she says she’s new, is at least triple the time she “says” she’s been working in the bar. Of course, you may never know the true length of her Bar Girl career; so it’s a safe bet to assume whatever she tells you about it is a “low-ball” lie.

If she’s a veteran, waiting at least 18-24 months is a conservative time span to consider.

Patience and wariness will prevent much of the emotional turmoil and financial catastrophes so commonly found among “ex” Asian Bar Girl/Western Man relationships.

Additionally, if she is (or looks) older than 20, look for the following hallmark signs of veteran Bar Girls:

1. Nocturnal living. Even after months with you, she can’t get out of bed until 1:30-3:30PM. In fact, getting up early to see the sunlight gives her a raging headache. Also, she will display the demeanor of a vampire that has been violently disturbed from her cryptic slumber.

2. She is a total slob (worse than Oscar from “The Odd Couple”) and can’t cook – even a piece of toast – because she’s too used to hotel cleaning staff, room service, restaurants, and 7-11 “cup noodles”.

3. She appears to have very few belongings. Why? They are strewn about her co-workers apartments or “ex” boyfriend’s places. Bar Girls are like gypsies; they are experts at making hasty get-aways.

4. She’s a spendthrift. Forget “like water through her fingers,” “air” is more like it! The cost of her “daily needs” easily surpass the normal, daily salary of any hardworking, college-educated, Thai worker.

5. In spite of no formal schooling (i.e., a university degree or night English classes at a Language School), she suspiciously speaks above-average English.

6. She disappears at a moment’s notice for hours and her explanation upon returning doesn’t hold water (a blatant lie).

7. She can drink you under the table.

8. You find drug paraphernalia.

9. She always wants to include “her friends” in everything that you two do. In fact, she will always choose time with her Bar Girl comrades over any time alone with you. Her overdependence on (and lavish affection for) her girlfriends will have you wondering if she is actually a bi-sexual. (And I know what you’re thinking. No, she is not a bi-sexual who likes to share!).

10. She’s constantly on the phone at odd hours with her “family,” especially the male members of her “family”.

If the majority of the above items describe your current partner, she is probably not in the “newbie” Bar Girl category: and therefore, should not be trusted without a long (a very long) trial period.

Sorry to be so blunt; but I must humbly confess that I’ve “been there and done that, mate”.

Again, when in doubt, wait, observe, and for God’s sake, protect yourself.

Did you hear me?

I said, “Wait. Observe. Then wait and observe some more.”

After that, you can make up your own mind based on your own real life, “hard-knocks” experience.

Japanese businesses

It is common for Japanese businesses to set out a small tray near a cash register so that customers can place their money on the tray rather than handing it directly to the cashier. If a business provides such a tray, it is a breach of etiquette to disregard the tray and instead hold out the money for the cashier to take by hand.

Attached for affection North American varieties of English

Fred and I were out at a soba place last week. Soba is the Japanese for buckwheat, but soba also means buckwheat noodles. When you hear most people talking about soba, they are probably referring to the noodles. Our waiter asked us what the English was for soba and I didn't even try to answer. Fred replied immediately that soba was fine. He continued by saying that some people would not understand and that you would need to explain. Then you could simply say that soba is buckwheat noodles. Fred concluded by comparing soba to sushi, saying that in 25 years everybody in the United States would probably understand the word soba, just as everybody now understands the words sushi and kimono.

Gourmet Food Trucks Are The Hip New Restaurants In Southern California

In Southern California, the old-fashioned sandwich trucks are being upgraded to mobile restaurants with menus as varied as the culture. In the face of chain restaurants and high operating costs, many small locally owned food businesses have disappeared and the catering truck industry is stepping into the gap.

The speed of the growth of this new development in the restaurant industry has, at times, created conflicts within some communities. The Southern California Mobile Food Vendors Association was formed to attempt to create a set of "best practices" for operating within the changing industry. While the rules and regulations are still developing, the popularity of the movement with the general public is unquestioned.

One of the many ways the industry is changing is in the use of Web sites and Twitter to let customers know the schedules and locations of their favorite gourmet traveling restaurant. The various truck owners post schedules and menus so their "followers" can easily make plans to meet for their favorite meal. The possibilities are seemingly endless. From a simple grilled cheese to Japanese noodles, there's something for almost every taste.

The Grilled Cheese Truck - Whether you are looking for that simple grilled cheese or something more exotic, this menu has an answer to the search. The cheese offerings start with the routine American and extend to a creamy Brie (on Cranberry Walnut bread) or Gruyere with lots of savory additions and interesting sides.

Barbie's Q - If your preference is St. Louis style ribs or pulled pork sandwiches, Barbie's can supply it along with the traditional sides. They even have a Veggie Burger for those who love barbecue but don't eat meat. Like many other gourmet food trucks, they also cater.

Skewers on Wheels - A non-traditional meal choice for many Americans, food on skewers lends itself to a wide variety of textures and flavors. From Shiitake mushrooms or tofu to Hawaiian spam pineapple the skewers can be paired with a salad and create a full meal for any taste preference.

TastyMeat - Meat lovers can choose from beef, lamb, or chicken in a savory sauce; add lettuce, tomato, and onions, then wrap it in a fresh flatbread for a delicious quick meal.

Kogi - Combine Korean barbecue with Mexican style and you get Spicy Pork Tacos or Short Rib Burritos and they haven't forgotten the vegetarians either, Tofu comes in either a taco or a burrito.

Asian Soul Kitchen - For a more traditional Asian meal, try Japanese soul food. Sample Yakisoba, a combination of noodles, veggies, and a flavorful sauce or for a more filling meal order Nijukaga a hearty stew of beef, potatoes, and noodles in a Bonita broth.

Even the old-fashioned ice cream trucks are leaping onto the gourmet, twittering bandwagon.

Coolhaus - Make an ice cream sandwich to order with your favorite cookie and ice cream. Choose from six cookie flavors and fill them with your choice of more than twenty ice creams. From the traditional vanilla bean to white chocolate macadamia, they make an ice cream sandwich new.

Get Shaved - Shaved ice may sound like another version of a "snow-cone", but the resemblance ends with the basic ingredient. These low-calorie (60-70 calories per 8 ounce serving) come in a myriad of flavors from Banana to Watermelon.

There are trucks that serve at most any hour of the day, from breakfast to dinner time. Whether you are looking for a Southwest Omelet or a slice of Pizza, there's a truck out there looking for your business. Twitter is the easiest way to keep track, but many are also on Facebook or have their own Web sites.
