Fear of Flying and How to Overcome It

Do you have a fear of flying? Here are some tips so that you can overcome your fear of flying. In today's fast-paced environment, every one of us has to travel by plane for business or for personal reasons, some time or the other in our lives even if we detest and are utterly scared of flying. Stagecoaches are old fashioned. Ships are outdated except when they are used to transport cargo. And trains, though still in vogue, may be on their way out in certain places. Besides, you can't let an assignment wait because you are afraid of flying. If you do that you might lose a valuable client and with it, a valuable contract and along with that, your job whether you are working in a company or whether you are managing your own business.

So if you have a fear of flying, what you have to do is not to avoid flying but to overcome your dread and fear of flying. Here is how you go about it.

Take the Bull By the Horns - Board A Flight: Consider taking a flight for your next vacation. If you are on a business assignment, ask your secretary to book a flight ticket for you. If you are running your own business this should not be a problem. But if you are an employee in a company, you'll get an air ticket only if you are a high ranking officer. In any case, do not shun flying. That will not help you to surmount your fear of flying. Try to board a plane for fulfilling an assignment, for closing a deal or if your objective is to enjoy the sun, sea and sand.

Fly Light: Do not carry much luggage with you. Try to go for a short trip. At the most, you can carry one hand luggage and one main luggage, which will go into the cargo hold of the plane.

Ensure that You Have Time: Check in, into the airport a couple of hours before departure so that there is enough time for security and baggage checks. Reaching the airport at the last moment can add to your anxiety and fear of flying if security personnel take long to get you through, choose to frisk you thoroughly.

Follow Airport Instructions: Start walking towards the departure gate as soon as you hear the announcement made by airport officials that instructs passengers sitting in the departure lounge to walk towards the departure terminal. Get into the bus that will drive you to your plane or get into the aerobridge attached to the deck of the plane.

Smile: Smile at the airhostess or flight steward who will greet you as soon as you board the plane. Smiling will make you feel lighter, happier and will help you to disperse your fear of flying.

Avoid Flying Off the Handle: Try to find your seat yourself or ask a flight steward or an airhostess to direct you to your seat. Sitting on the wrong seat can lead to unnecessary scuffles with other passengers and can demoralize you before your flight takes off. I must warn you of one thing beforehand. Air travelers are not very well-behaved people.

Your Fears are Baseless: Sit back and relax. You can pray a little if you want. But it is not compulsory because the plane WILL NOT CRASH. Remember one thing. The probability of an air crash is extremely low. But air crashes, whenever they happen, are blown out of proportion and are exaggerated into interesting media accounts and movies. In reality, the probability of a car or road or railway accident is much higher than the probability of an air crash. If you are that apprehensive on a plane, you should be even more apprehensive when driving a car or riding a train or when you are walking on the street. Because real statistics show that accidents on the road are not only far more likely than accidents in air but also that the total number of road accidents across the world exceed the total number of global air accidents by hundreds of thousands! So there is no substantial basis behind your fear of flying!

Don't Panic: When the plane starts moving, don't get panicky. Tie your seat belt properly. If you are a first time flyer, let me tell you that tying your seat belt is the easiest thing in the world. You just have to take one end, put it around your waist, and fit it into the locker of the other end. You will hear a 'click' when that happens. Ask a steward or an airhostess to show you the way if you start fumbling. In any case, flight attendants tell you how to put on your seat belt while they are explaining the emergency exits to you. And besides, it is also mentioned in the chart (we shall deal with that in the next point). Accept the scented towel that the airhostess gives you and press it close to your face. The smell of the perfume in the tissue or the towel is so captivating that it will distract you from your fear of flying.

Relax; it is Just a Routine Matter: Try to look at the flight attendant while they are instructing you on emergency exits. A chart will be given to you regarding emergency exits, oxygen masks, how you will tie your seat belt, what to do in case of an emergency, etc. This chart will be in the pocket that is fixed to the back of the seat in front of you. You can refer to the chart while following the airhostess's instructions. But let me tell you that this is a routine procedure. The purpose of the chart is not to augment your fear of flying. DO NOT MISINTERPRET THE AIRHOSTESS'S INSTRUCTIONS AS A WARNING AGAINST IMMINENT DANGER. Do not ever assume that you have to be extremely well-versed with the instructions because your plane will crash. NO. YOUR PLANE WILL NEVER CRASH. It is just a procedure that the flight attendants have to tell you about, so that you are prepared if the worst comes to the worst. God forbid, that will never happen to you. So you can follow what the airhostess is saying if you want to or just casually glance at the chart. However, if you are a heart patient or suffer from asthma or breathing problems, you should know how to install the oxygen mask at a moment's notice. But this i.e., your problem of requiring oxygen if you are a heart or an asthma patient, is something you would have to be alert about even if you are traveling in the hills, or by car or by train. It has nothing to do with traveling in air or an air crash.

Be at Ease: Rest back. In any case, while taking off, the plane will compel you to rest backwards. Do not gaze out of the window. If you are prone to jitters, you might get butterflies in your stomach if you stare out of the window.

Taking Off: Every plane starts moving in the same manner before taking off. It starts to run on its wheels on the tarmac very slowly at first until it comes to the final stretch of runway. Here, the plane accelerates until it starts racing down the runway at a speed of about 400 to 500 miles per hour. Trees whiz past and the tarmac starts disappearing. The very atmosphere outside becomes filmy before a sudden jerk tells you that you have been lifted into the air at an acute angle. The plane tilts heavily. At this point, it is advisable for people like you not to glance out of the window because you might feel giddy. In any case, the fast disappearing city and airport beneath will all appear to you to be slanted and will make you feel dizzy unless you are a seasoned flyer. Even seasoned, daredevil flyers with no fear of flying feel sick at this point of time. This is because the sudden jump into the air is accompanied by a change of air pressure within the plane that tends to make lots of passengers want to vomit. So, just shut your eyes and wait patiently until the plane starts flying horizontally and normally. Again let me repeat, there is nothing to be frightened of. The nausea and the whirring in your ears are things you will get accustomed to, soon enough. And in any case, if you feel like throwing up, it does not mean that the plane will crash. You can always vomit into the airbag fixed to the pocket in front of you.

Medicines to Take On the Fly: I have advised many people who suffer from the 'fear of flying' syndrome to swallow a digestive-cum-anti-dizziness tablet before embarking on an airplane journey. It helps to quell the feeling of nausea when you are taking off. Different brands of prochlorperazine generally suffice for this purpose. Prochlorperazine is sold in different nations under different brand names such as Compazine, Stemetil, Stemzine, Buccastem, and Phenotil. Any one of them will do. But do not buy medicines off the counter. Please ask your doctor before you purchase any medicine that will help you to restrain nausea when you are flying. He or she will probably prescribe you one of the five brands mentioned above but you must ask him or her before you buy the stuff.

The Lighter You Are, the Better You Can Fly: I also advise people to eat lightly before they board a plane. If you have had a heavy meal, there is more chance that you will feel sick while flying than if you have had a light meal. As the plane speeds through the atmosphere amidst clouds and with fluctuating air pressure, you might feel some churning in your stomach if you have eaten a heavy meal before getting into the plane. Also, take some cotton wads with you so that you can plug your ears with them when taking off. Lots of folks cannot stand the whirring in the ears that they suffer when there is a sudden alteration in air pressure, when the plane is taking off. You can also ask the flight attendants for cotton but it is better you take them with you so that you do not have to wait for the attendant to get you a piece of cotton.

Fly High with Music: Music is a great healer. It can also help you to conquer your fear of flying. As soon as the plane starts flying in the air normally, take out the cotton and put the headphone instead to your ears. How will you know that the plane is flying normally? As soon as there is an announcement from the cockpit telling you that you may unfasten your seatbelts, you will know that the plane has begun to fly normally. This announcement comes typically 15 to 20 minutes after the plane has started its motion. Most airplanes provide headphones to their passengers nowadays. So instead of sitting and staring blankly into space, make use of the headphones. Listen to your favorite numbers, tracks and albums and forget that you are hanging in mid air. Listen to Mozart's sonatas and symphonies, Beethoven's symphonies or the beats of Elvis, Abba, Enrique, and Britney to keep your terrors at bay.

Watch TV: Most international flights come with TV facilities. So, you can easily watch the film that is being shown on the main TV screen hanging in front of you, a few seats ahead, or watch your own TV that is attached to the back of the seat in front of you. Planes nowadays have become havens for movie buffs. You can watch any film that you want while flying because TV sets in planes are loaded with films of every genre and type.

Bon Appetit, Bon Voyage: Eating while flying will definitely wipe away your fear of flying. Remember, I said that it is not recommended that you board a plane immediately after eating a heavy meal as this can give you airsickness? But there is no harm in eating once you are aboard. In fact, meals served in airplanes are strictly light so that passengers don't feel like vomiting or going to the bathroom too often. Eating, at the best of times, is a great pastime. And it is all the more pleasurable in a plane as there is nothing much for you to do there. So, look forward to your meals with appetite and gusto. I can tell you that airplane food is delicious. Whether it is breakfast, lunch, snacks or dinner that they serve you, it is yummy and delectable and will erase your fears of flying away. I have coached many people who had deep-seated fears of flying. I told them to forget about dieting and weight problems while flying and to eat heartily as eating is the best therapy for such people. Sure enough, all of them have overcome their fears of flying, initially, by eating well on planes and finally, through intense counseling and frequent flying. Eating a good and tasty meal can really be entertaining. You can stick your headphones to your ears while you are munching your sausage, bacon, ham, or potato chips but I suggest that since eating is a better therapy than listening to music, remove your headphones during your meal and eat wholeheartedly. Food is always served neatly on flights in little packed trays where the cereal (bread or rice or noodles), the meat, and the dessert are given in separate containers. Cutlery comes in another additional little pack. Airplane food is served this way so that passengers find it convenient to handle the food when they place the trays on the flexible tabletops while they eat. Flexible tabletops may be unscrewed from the back of the seat in front so that you can place your tray of food on the tabletop. You can ask the flight attendants for juices and cold drinks as you eat. Alcohol and energy drinks are also served on international flights, but I do not recommend them. They might affect you adversely and then you might attribute your uneasiness in the air to your fear of flying instead of the alcohol. Enjoy the taste of the rice or the soft bread or the steak or the fish to the full and forget everything about what may happen if you crash land. Drink your fruit juice or soft drink to the lees and celebrate life!

Remember flying is all about celebrating life, not thinking of disaster and death. The airplane is an answer to one of humankind's oldest cravings, the craving to fly like a bird, the craving to go places in a short time, the yearning to master the skies, the desire to prove that humans are the most resourceful and powerful animals on Earth. So enjoy every moment of your flight by gorging on scrumptious food, listening to heavenly music and watching blockbuster cinema and reading magazines.

When You Fly, Time Flies: Whether your flight is a two-hour, a four-hour, a six-hour, or a twelve-hour flight, you'll find that time flies while you are in the air. The longer your flight, the more chance you'll have to eat mouthwatering food and listen to lovely music and watch all time great movies. Snacks are always sumptuous experiences beginning with tea, coffee, cakes and sandwiches and ending with ice creams. Flying at night can be a peaceful experience. Most of the lights in the plane are switched off except for the night lamps and blankets are distributed so that you can sleep comfortably. Some watch movies through the night. But I would advise you to sleep and relax. There is nothing to be tense about, nothing to worry about. Besides, dying in your sleep can be the best way to die. Hey! Hope you didn't take that one seriously. Just pulling your leg. What I mean is that sleep is good for you. It can assuage all your fears of flying. Do not be anxious. You will always wake up alive and kicking and relaxed and in no other state but this. Sometimes, even if you want to take a nap, your sleep may be cut short. This happens when flight attendants serve food through the night. Some find this thrilling and some find this disturbing. But there are planes that really want you to have a good time while flying and so they serve food through the night - dinner, supper, beverages, drinks, snacks.....and breakfast. Another reason why you may not be allowed your beauty sleep when you are flying is when you have to stop at an airport in between to catch a connecting flight. This often happens when you are flying across continents. You might have to stop at the Dubai International Airport to take a connecting flight if you are flying from Asia to Europe or at an European airport in order to board a connecting flight if you are flying from Asia to the Americas. This disruption can cause a break in sleep but do not lose patience. You can take forty winks as soon as you board your connecting flight unless the flight attendants on the connecting flight start serving you food too.

It is Not the Time to Worry When You Are on Cloud Nine: Lots of people get alarmed when their planes cut across clouds. If the plane is going to pass through a mass of clouds, you will be informed of it in advance through announcements from the cockpit. You will be told to sit in your seat and have your seatbelt on so that you don't lose balance and fall while the plane is slashing forward through a cloud. There is no need to tremble and quake while your plane is bumping through a cloud. Flying through masses of wooly clouds is an everyday thing for pilots though it might be new to you. All you have to do is to sit still in your seat and wait patiently to be out of the cloud. There is no reason for you to get the heebie-jeebies. Your plane will never crash whether it is in or out of the clouds.

The Joy of Landing: Before touchdown, once again, you shall be asked to don your seatbelt. The plane will start losing height so you can have a prochlorperazine pill so that you do not feel the ill effects. Buildings, roads, trees and vehicles will gradually come into view like objects on a game board about half-an-hour before you land. But if you still have a fear of flying, do not look downwards. Just sit back and close your eyes in your seat during landing until you feel the wheels hit the ground suddenly and forcefully. For most people who have a fear of flying, this is a moment to cheer. When the wheels hit the tarmac, they almost always breathe a sigh of relief and open their eyes wide with confidence for the first time. Okay, quite natural. The funny thing is that while they hated to open their eyes when the plane was racing down the tarmac before taking off, they seem to love to open their eyes and stare at the trees whizzing past and the ground speeding by, once the plane has landed. I know that you too feel the same way and that you too shut and open your eyes in the same manner because you have a fear of flying. But if you have flown at least once, you will know that there is really no cause for alarm. All the same, I don't want to take away your fun when the plane finally lands, when the airhostess makes an announcement about the weather outside and hopes that you had a happy journey. I don't grudge the joy that you feel for having landed safely or laugh at you because you thanked the Lord for your safe journey because I guess that we should be thankful for the smallest things of life.

Fear of Flying Graph: By the time, it is your second flight, you will become definitely more adventurous. By the third flight, you shall become confident. By the fourth flight, you might be able to help other passengers with their seatbelts. By the fifth flight, you may actually want to pursue a career in flying and piloting or regret not having been a pilot if you have passed the age. By your sixth flight, you will get so addicted to that soaring feeling that you shall actually begin to love flying. By the seventh flight, you will still feel heady but will start to find flying routine. By the eighth flight, you might get a trifle bored unless you eat or listen to music or watch TV constantly. By your ninth flight, flying will be a means by which you can relax between hectic conferences and meetings. And by your tenth flight, when you have shed the last traces of your fears of flying, flying will seem no different from your daily work, habits, etc.

Summer Festival in a Small Japanese Community

Summer is the time for festivals throughout Japan, and major events are enjoyed in nearly every large town and city, complete with dancing parades and large fireworks displays. These big events are fun and exciting, however I tend to enjoy more the smaller community festivals which are organized by nearly every small town and village. Small community festivals are typically held on the grounds of the local Shinto (native religion of Japan) shrine where a wooden platform is erected for use by dancers and taiko drummers. In our community of Yada, nearly everyone reports to the shrine the day before the festival in order to prepare the grounds for the big event. Loud firecrackers are used to wake everyone up and summon them to the shrine to begin work. The women and children busy themselves with raking leaves and clearing the shrine grounds while the men work together to assemble the tents and the wooden dance platform. When this work is done everyone enjoys a short party with food and drinks which helps to get the community into the proper mood for the upcoming festival. On the day of the festival adults and children take turns performing for the community after which everyone dances around the platform and enjoys popular festival foods such as yakisoba, roasted corn, shaved ice and drinks such as Ramune soda. After nightfall fireworks bring the event to an exciting climax. Nearly every face at a small community festival is familiar and those in attendance can enjoy a ...

Adventure Travel In Peru - Climbing El Misti

Sitting on top of the world, looking down on creation...

I don't remember the rest of the song and we were over 10,000 feet short of the top of the world but it was a pretty good view anyway. Finally, a dream of about two years was completed. I made it to the top of El Misti, the volcano right outside of Arequipa, Peru, that had been calling my name since I first saw it about two years before. I tried to climb it as a day hike then but failed due to a very late start and not being used to the altitude, reaching only about 15, 500 feet. I still think it can be done as a day hike so that is a future goal.

I had been waiting eagerly for my friends Jason and Lisa, SCARAB (Southern California Adventure Racing Buddies) members from Los Angeles, to get to here. We had been communicating by email for months as they were on a round the world trip and we wanted to get together when they came through Peru. Our schedules kept changing but at the last minute they meshed and we were able to meet a couple of times in Arequipa. I arranged the use of a Suzuki 4x4 and Jason and I made plans to climb El Misti on Saturday and Sunday. Lisa decided to relax in Arequipa so we drafted her to be our chauffeur as it is not safe to leave a vehicle at the trailhead. We did some quick shopping, and after getting lost on the way to the trailhead, we arrived safely and were ready to start hiking at 12:30 pm. We were told that it was a five hour climb to the campsite but we were hoping it would be less because that would have meant arriving at camp about the time it got dark. I also realized that we were on a different trail than the one I had attempted two years before so it was a totally new trail to me (there are three routes up to the summit).

We were well matched, my year of living at 8,800 feet and hiking regularly at altitudes of over 12,000 feet made up for my age and Jason's (relative) youth and three weeks of high altitude hiking in Peru made up for his living at sea level in L.A. We followed an easy trail up to the campsite at about 15,000 feet, arriving there in three hours and 10 minutes. We were glad that we hadn't left earlier and had to just sit around in the cool wind. This also gave us hope that the supposedly five to seven hour hike to the summit should be less than that. We had also been told to expect temps as low as zero degrees so were thankful that it was warmer than normal. Helped by the cloud cover it didn't get below 30 degrees, so we were plenty warm in our 20 degree bags and my cheap Wensel tent.

After we got camp set up, Jason suggested scouting out the trail to the summit, as we planned on leaving about 5:00 in the morning and weren't sure if we could find it in the dark. We easily found the trail and hiked up about 20 minutes to another campsite; the people there said they planned on starting for the summit at about 2:00 am. By the time we got back down to our camp, the wind had died down and it felt warmer, especially after hot chicken noodle soup with tuna, cheese and bread and some tea. I used my soda can stove, which worked fine, after removing the windshield; I guess it needed a bit more air at that elevation too. Our campsite neighbor, a Frenchman suffering from the altitude wasn't looking too good, we found out he didn't attempt the summit. We were still below the clouds so got a great view of Arequipa as the lights came on and the quarter moon illuminated Misti above us. By 7:00 pm we were in our sleeping bags, hoping to get a good night's sleep before the 4:00 am alarm.

Following a breakfast of instant oatmeal, we were on the trail at 4:45 in the morning, climbing by headlights, with very little trouble following the trail. We could see the lights of other climbers, which seemed a long ways above us. Again it was a fairly easy trail, not too much sand (unlike the trail from my previous attempt) and enough large rocks to make it interesting, but also harder to see the trail. By this time I was deeply regretting my forgetting my gloves as I hurriedly packed for the trip but Jason said his hands were warm enough and let me use his - thanks Jason!

About the time it got light, we caught up to two other groups that had started earlier but were climbing very slow. One of the guides asked if one of his team members could follow us up so Steve joined us, again a very good match as we were all climbing at the same slow steady speed, taking very short breaks every so often. We soon lost sight of those below us and never saw them again until we got back down to their camp; unfortunately they had to turn back and were not able to reach the summit. When we were about a half hour away, we could see a large group standing on the summit. They had gone up a shorter route on the backside; we met them later after they had explored the crater. We finally got some sunlight when we reached a saddle between the summit and the crater, which really felt good. We had been climbing up the dark side, away from the sun, which made it very cool but we were also treated to a great view of Misti casting a shadow over miles of landscape when the sun rose on the other side. At 8:55, after crossing a couple of small snow patches and a couple of sandy stretches, we were on the summit at 19,100 feet, four hours and 10 minutes from camp. We marveled at the huge iron cross, about 20 feet high that was up there. It was constructed in sections; each about three feet long. I couldn't have carried even one section up there. We were hoping that it had been helicoptered up so that weren't totally put to shame by the super humans it would have taken to carry all the pieces up there.

After taking a lot of pictures of the almost unreal landscape offered by the crater, black sand, light rocks and snow, and a few more of neighboring 19,925 foot Chachani, we went down to the saddle and ate a light snack. Both of us were feeling good, no altitude problems but to keep it that way we decided to forgo exploring the crater and headed back down. We didn't hire a guide for the climb but were fortunate that Marcio, my guide friend, went with us to the trailhead and pointed out the route up to us. Steve's guide explained the route back down to camp. No need to hike down, just go over to the dark gray sand slope and "ski" down that, lots of fun! We stopped at Steve's camp and left him there with his teammates who were packing up, and then continued on down. We made it down to our camp in about two hours; we would have made it faster except we stopped to take a lot of pictures of our fun descent! After a simple lunch (should have brought another package of soup), which finished all of our food except a little trail mix, we broke camp and headed on down. There was no rush because Lisa wasn't scheduled to meet us until 4:00 pm. We had expected on being at the summit about noon, instead we were back at camp by 11:00 am. After a couple of final photos at the trailhead, we decided to walk down the dirt road, getting almost to the highway before meeting Lisa and Marcio. That gave us plenty of time to talk about our next adventure, after they finish their trip. Of course Chachani is calling our names, there are also two 6,000 meter mountain peaks on the way to Cotahuasi where I live, Coropuna at 21,075 feet and Solimana at 19,985 feet. And then there is my plan for a two week bike ride, all between 9,000 and 16,000 feet.

Gourmet Food Truck Fad Takes Over Southern California Restaurant Scene

In Southern California, the old-fashioned sandwich trucks are being upgraded to mobile restaurants with menus as varied as the culture. In the face of chain restaurants and high operating costs, many small locally owned food businesses have disappeared and the catering truck industry is stepping into the gap.

The speed of the growth of this new development in the restaurant industry has, at times, created conflicts within some communities. The Southern California Mobile Food Vendors Association was formed to attempt to create a set of "best practices" for operating within the changing industry. While the rules and regulations are still developing, the popularity of the movement with the general public is unquestioned.

One of the many ways the industry is changing is in the use of Web sites and Twitter to let customers know the schedules and locations of their favorite gourmet traveling restaurant. The various truck owners post schedules and menus so their "followers" can easily make plans to meet for their favorite meal. The possibilities are seemingly endless. From a simple grilled cheese to Japanese noodles, there's something for almost every taste.

The Grilled Cheese Truck - Whether you are looking for that simple grilled cheese or something more exotic, this menu has an answer to the search. The cheese offerings start with the routine American and extend to a creamy Brie (on Cranberry Walnut bread) or Gruyere with lots of savory additions and interesting sides.

Barbie's Q - If your preference is St. Louis style ribs or pulled pork sandwiches, Barbie's can supply it along with the traditional sides. They even have a Veggie Burger for those who love barbecue but don't eat meat. Like many other gourmet food trucks, they also cater.

Skewers on Wheels - A non-traditional meal choice for many Americans, food on skewers lends itself to a wide variety of textures and flavors. From Shiitake mushrooms or tofu to Hawaiian spam pineapple the skewers can be paired with a salad and create a full meal for any taste preference.

TastyMeat - Meat lovers can choose from beef, lamb, or chicken in a savory sauce; add lettuce, tomato, and onions, then wrap it in a fresh flatbread for a delicious quick meal.

Kogi - Combine Korean barbecue with Mexican style and you get Spicy Pork Tacos or Short Rib Burritos and they haven't forgotten the vegetarians either, Tofu comes in either a taco or a burrito.

Asian Soul Kitchen - For a more traditional Asian meal, try Japanese soul food. Sample Yakisoba, a combination of noodles, veggies, and a flavorful sauce or for a more filling meal order Nijukaga a hearty stew of beef, potatoes, and noodles in a Bonita broth.

Even the old-fashioned ice cream trucks are leaping onto the gourmet, twittering bandwagon.

Coolhaus - Make an ice cream sandwich to order with your favorite cookie and ice cream. Choose from six cookie flavors and fill them with your choice of more than twenty ice creams. From the traditional vanilla bean to white chocolate macadamia, they make an ice cream sandwich new.

Get Shaved - Shaved ice may sound like another version of a "snow-cone", but the resemblance ends with the basic ingredient. These low-calorie (60-70 calories per 8 ounce serving) come in a myriad of flavors from Banana to Watermelon.

There are trucks that serve at most any hour of the day, from breakfast to dinner time. Whether you are looking for a Southwest Omelet or a slice of Pizza, there's a truck out there looking for your business. Twitter is the easiest way to keep track, but many are also on Facebook or have their own Web sites.

Freshwater Pearls For the 1st Wedding Anniversary

Without doubt, your 1st wedding anniversary is a significant milestone. A whole year together as man and wife! For a woman, it is a super special anniversary and one she looks forward to with eagerness and, yes, anticipation. And, it is your acid test as far as romance and creativity go.

There are many things that you might want to give your better half on this momentous occasion, but jewellery always tops the list for women. Luckily, choosing the right jewellery just became easier as each wedding anniversary also has a traditional gemstone associated with it.

The 'gemstone' for the first anniversary year is the lovely Freshwater Pearl. Learn a little more about this fascinating gemstone...

What is a pearl?

A pearl is perhaps the only gemstone that is formed within a living, breathing organism -- so it is not actually a gemstone at all! When an irritant penetrates the tissue of the mussel or oyster, the mollusc starts secreting a substance in sheer self-defence. This substance is known as nacre -- a combination of crystalline and organic substance secreted by the mollusc as a defence mechanism to counter the foreign body that gets lodged within the mantle tissue. The nacre spreads itself around the irritant in concentric layers till a few years later it finally becomes a pearl!

Basic forms of pearls

Pearls come in two basic forms and two classes: freshwater and saltwater; natural and cultured. While natural pearls are, more or less, an 'accident' of nature, cultured pearls owe their existence entirely due to human intervention. Similarly, freshwater pearls grow in freshwater mussels in non-saline environment such as ponds and lakes, while salt water pearls are formed in salt water molluscs such as oysters.

Freshwater pearls vs. Saltwater pearls

The good news is that freshwater pearls are not as exorbitantly priced as their saline water cousins. What is more, the freshwater pearls come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours ranging from white to pink, green, grey, silver, lavender and every rainbow hue! Since they are not 'beaded' with a nucleus, these pearls are made entirely of solid nacre. This makes freshwater pearls more durable, and more resistant to any wear and tear and degeneration.

Natural freshwater pearls are formed in various species of freshwater mussels which inhabit lakes, rivers, ponds and other fresh water bodies. Although these freshwater pearl mussels occur in hot and cold climates, most freshwater cultured pearls sold in the market today come from China.
Cultured saltwater pearls are mostly round while freshwater pearls appear in almost every imaginable shape: round, drop, rice, button, oval, semi-round, circle or ringed, baroque and semi-baroque.

Japanese researchers create cultured freshwater pearls

Today, most pearls sold in the market have been artificially created -- in other words, they are cultured pearls. A series of experiments and discoveries made by Japanese researchers Tatsuhei Mise, Tokishi Nishikawa, and the son of a noodle maker, Kokichi Mikimoto in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led to a revolution in the pearl industry. There was no need now to wait for 'accidental' pearls to happen. One could do so just as easily! A tiny foreign object was inserted inside a mollusc, which would then automatically respond the way it did in nature -- by secreting nacre, the basis of all pearls. The mussel is then returned to the water and tended for 2-6 years till the pearl is formed.

Biwa pearls

The most famous type of freshwater cultured pearl is the Biwa pearl which came from mussels grown in Lake Biwa, Japan's largest and most ancient freshwater lake. During 1971, these Biwa pearl farmers produced as many as six tons of cultured pearls. Sadly, growing pollution levels have now rendered the lake incapable of supporting this enterprise.

China takes over Japan in freshwater cultured pearl production

Today, China has raced ahead of Japan and has become the world's largest producer of freshwater pearls, producing a staggering 1,500 metric tons of these fine gems per year.

Eating Healthy at Disney

For many people, eating well while on a vacation or on a road trip seems quite difficult. Especially for parents, a trip more than 30 minutes from home means feeding the family in the quickest most convenient way possible. Disney parks are known for their fun attractions as well as their multiple food kiosks and restaurants. At first glance your food options might just seem like chicken fingers and french fries. That can certainly be true if you don't take the time to look past the first choices that come to your eyes. Here are a few pointers to keep you and your family happy and on a healthier track. We'll also include a few ideas of where to eat at some of the parks.

1. Take your time. Everyone wants to rush to the next attraction of course. When you take your time to eat it gives everyone a chance to get centered and to plan your attack on the next section of the park. The lines for attractions can be long and frustrating. Plan your meals and use them as strategy sessions, as well as a chance to rest your feet!

2. Get fast passes in advance. This one ties in well with tip 1. If you're planning on going to some of the busiest rides in the parks you'll see very quickly that the lines quickly grow to a 1.5 hour to 2 hour wait. Not only that but early in the day the fast passes run out. When you get a pass to one busy ride, then skip on to another, you'll have time to go back to the first and not wait in any line. Then go off to another attraction, get a fast pass, then plan your meal.

Here's an example:

You show up to the park around opening and get yourselves a fruit cup, coffee, juices, etc... Then get a fast pass to a busy ride at 9am (that might have you come back to the ride at 10am). You then head off to a smaller attraction or two. Then head off to the ride you have your first fast pass for. On your way there get a fast pass to another big thing. That one will likely have you returning after lunch sometime. Ah ha! Now, go to some smaller attractions as well as to the second fast pass ride and head to a lunch right after that. Use that time to sit quietly making some healthy food choices. After a healthy lunch, go to the third fast pass ride that you picked up just before lunch. Using this technique will give you a sense of relaxation and less of a need to feed yourselves with fast, unhealthy choices.

3. Pick a few healthy snacks throughout the day (and even pack your own in advance).

Walking around all day takes a lot of energy. If you have granola bars in your bag or you stop at a kiosk and grab a piece of fruit and some water you'll have more energy to keep going and you'll be less hungry when meal time hits. This can give you the peace of mind to make smart choices. Remember, making these good food choices will give you the energy and attention span you'll need for a full day(s) adventure. Here are a few places we tried. This is certainly not a complete list, but it should get you started. Happy eating!

Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World, Florida.

Downtown Disney is a typical first stop for travelers to Orlando's Walt Disney World. There is so much fun shopping and dining that I highly recommend getting there on the front or back end of your visit. The Downtown area features places like Planet Hollywood and the House of Blues. For our last trip we chose a faster, cheaper option, The Earl of Sandwich. At The Earl of Sandwich you can find some yummy, and many healthy choices. They have hot sandwiches (some healthier than others), healthy wraps, salads, smoothies and plenty of sides to choose from.

Magic Kingdom

As soon as you walk through the gates at opening (and of course you will get there for the opening show, right?), you are walking down Main Street. I suggest that you beat the crowds and get in line at the coffees shop, breakfast spot on the right side of the road as you are walking toward the castle. On our last trip I got a coffee and a banana. There are plenty of other great choices. Don't weigh yourself down with a meaty, bready breakfast sandwich so early, I say. Use this as an opportunity to jump start your morning.

Epcot

Where to start here?! The World Showcase features food, rides and other sights from many places around the world. We started somewhere close to the middle at Japan on our last trip and then worked our way around trying a little from a lot of spots. In Japan they have sushi, noodle soups and curries. There is plenty to choose from and many pretty healthy picks depending on your tastes. They have a faster, seat yourself restaurant called The Yakitori House and a fine dining spot called Teppan Edo.

There are plenty of ways to blow your diet in Epcot, so stay grounded.

Animal Kingdom

What a fun place! Why ruin your day by getting sick after Everest because you ate an 1,136 calorie turkey leg (1) in one of the parks? Keep it light and have some fun. The Harambe Fruit Market has stuff for anyone for a quick snack. For a larger meal, try The Rainforest Cafe in Animal Kingdom and Downtown Disney. Enjoy your trip. Have fun and stay healthy!
